Who likes snow at the end of March?! No, it is more like what gardener likes snow in March?! I don’t! But this is life. Yes, we may get snow again, and that means that our front yard transformation project is slowing down a tiny bit.
If this is your first time on our blog, you may want to read this post to learn more about the project. You would notice there that we did take the weather into consideration, planning our yard transformation. We supposed it might snow or rain here, this is why we thought the 6-week timeline would be more right at this time of the year.
UPDATED March 27, 2018: The next round of the challenge will launch on April 20, 2018. Please sign up to receive more information and links to the link-up page at the form below 😉
Anyway,
Our Front Yard Transformation Project is underway
This will be a quick update. We do have the good news to share as well!
As you may know, we are hoping to stay under the $500 budget with this transformation. Our biggest anticipated expense was the rock wall that we were planning to build along the driveway.
Sooooo…
We went to talk to our neighbour who had recently built a small retaining wall and asked him if he could provide us with the contact information of his supplier.
Aaaand, the neighbour’s offered us the rocks from his front yard!
For free!
Who doesn’t like free?
Especially, if it is something you were looking for and were ready to pay for?!
So, here we are. With a beautiful collection of various size rocks. Which are ready to serve a great purpose: to showcase the beauty of the plants planted in the bed.
Ahhhh… I can see it all in my mind. Sigh.
I can’t wait to see it all in reality!
But, it is not happening in a day. We still have 4 more weeks to go 😉
We will be building a rock wall in the next 2 weeks. Don’t forget to come back and check on the progress!

Adding Raised Garden Beds
We are building the raised beds out of the pallets. This is not an ideal material to use if you are looking for a more durable solution. But it is another free material that we can use.
Yes, we like free stuff if they can serve a good purpose.
We will be ordering soil from a local landscaping company and amending it with our own compost and worm castings. We keep our worms in the greenhouse we built last year.
Our tiny seedlings growing under the lights in the basement are feeling pretty good and waiting to be transplanted to the beds as soon as they are ready. If you are new to the gardening, you may want to check this post by Julie at Dogwoods & Dandelions to learn more about starting vegetables from seeds.
In the meantime, here is a picture of a lovely forsythia to add a little colour to the gray rainy day 🙂 I think we need one in our garden too 🙂
So, what do you think?
